Cebu Pastor Arrested For Death Of Wife
- February 19, 2009
CEBU CITY – The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) today arrested a pastor for his alleged involvement in the killing of his wife, whom he reported abducted last week and was found dead the other day.
Investigators said they found evidence that would link Pastor Leonardo Jastiva, of the International Missionary Society of Seventh-Day Adventist Church Reform Movement, in the death of his wife Judith, 39.
Lead case investigator George Ylanan, chief of the Intelligence Detective Management Branch of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said they discovered that the text messages that Jastiva received from the alleged killers were allegedly created by Jastiva himself as the two mobile phone numbers used by the alleged criminals were traced to Jastiva.
Jastiva earlier reported to the police that unidentified men abducted his wife. The police immediately doubted his claim when he refused to file an affidavit that would support his claim.
On Wednesday, a farmer found the rotting body of woman in Sitio Cantipla I, barangay Tabunan. Jastiva immediately identified the body as that of his wife.
What puzzled policemen was that the killers sent a text message to Jastiva, informing him of the exact, detailed location of where the body can be found. The alleged abductors even sent another text message containing a sketch of the area where Judith’s body could be located.
CCPO Director Patrocinio Comendador then ordered Ylanan and several CCPO personnel to go to the upland barangay. But while searching in Cantipla, the police did not find anything.
However, Jastiva, who conducted his own search in the area, claimed that he found a jacket which he confirmed to be owned by his wife.
The police yesterday conducted a thorough investigation and found out that the mobile numbers used by the abductors can be traced to Jastiva. Ylanan said Jastiva was texting himself. A press conference was set this afternoon.
