A conservative Christian institution of higher learning in a very conservative city was rocked by scandal when one of its senior officers was arrested by an undercover policeman for allegedly cruising for sex.
Robert Williams, the chief financial officer of Cincinnati Christian University, was arrested on Nov. 29, 2008, for allegedly getting into a man’s car in Mt. Airey Forest and touching the man’s genitals. The man turned out to be an undercover cop.
As reported by a local newspaper, the university placed Williams on administrative leave while school officials “assess the facts of the case.”
CCU President David Faust was quoted in a statement as saying, “We are shocked and dismayed by the news. This is a personal tragedy for him and for his family, and we lift them up in our prayers.”
Formerly known as Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary, Cincinnati Christian University is one of the oldest and largest schools in the Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. CCU was established in 1924.
Faust has given the school’s mission as “lighting the hill of Calvary-lighting the way for men and women of all ethnic groups to obtain a degree of higher education in a Christian environment in their preparation to light the world for Christ.”
Cincinnati is one of the most socially conservative cities above the Mason-Dixon Line. It has been embroiled in several controversies over issues like pornography and gay rights. In one of the most notable contretemps, the city sued a prominent local museum for showing the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe.
