Ex-pastor in court on money theft case

- January 11, 2011

HAVERHILL — There was no clerical collar and he appeared to have lost a considerable amount of weight.

The Rev. Keith LeBlanc was dressed in a sweater and casual pants when he appeared in Haverhill District Court yesterday. He was listed on a police booking sheet as weighing 200 pounds when he was arrested in September, but is thinner now.

LeBlanc appeared for a pretrial hearing on charges he stole $83,147 from St. John the Baptist Church while serving as pastor of that Catholic parish.

Yesterday, prosecutors said they have about 1,000 documents in the case, including bank records.

LeBlanc’s attorney, William Sullivan of Haverhill, said he will fight the charges and file a motion to suppress evidence, but he gave no other details. LeBlanc refused to speak to The Eagle-Tribune.

According to a report filed by Detective Glenn Fogarty, LeBlanc stole $83,147 from the parish between 2004 and last June, when he suddenly resigned as pastor and went to the St. John Vianney Center in Pennsylvania for treatment. He spent thousands of dollars on pornography, according to the detective’s report.
