Former Pgh. Police Department Chaplain Arrested
- October 23, 2008
A former chaplain for the Pittsburgh Police Department was arrested today, accused of stealing money that was supposed to be given to help the family of a young shooting victim.
The former police chaplain, identified as Keith Smith, was arrested this morning.
Investigators say he was soliciting money for the family of a North Side girl who was gunned down earlier this year, but the money never went to the family.
Police say they know of about $300 right now, but they believe that more money is out there.
Last January, 12-year-old Jolesa Barber was killed when rounds of gunfire hit the home she was inside of on Brightridge Street on the North Side. Her mother was also injured during the incident.
Meanwhile, in August, authorities say Smith and another police chaplain were fired by Police Chief Nate Harper after several local pastors raised concerns about their religious credentials.
Smith and Zinda were religious partners who would visit homicide scenes to comfort the families of victims, officials report.
Police have scheduled a news conference about the case for this afternoon
