Veil row: College teacher gets bail
- January 11, 2011
The college teacher who was arrested three days ago on charges of ‘outraging the modesty’ of a student, for removing the veil of a Muslim girl, was released on bail on Tuesday.
The arrest of Father Baa had paralysed classes at St Xavier’s College where students and teachers rallied behind the teacher, a Catholic priest known for discipline, and demanded his release. Many teachers and students at the college felt that police action on the teacher was harsh while the police blamed a section of the media for sensationalism.
The incident took place on Friday when some students, agitating against a decision of the college to bar students who got below 45 per cent marks to appear in the Plus II exams, were invited by principal Nicholas Tete to resolve the issue. The students’ delegation was accompanied by mediapersons.
